people in all modern societies use drugs, but today's youth are expertimenting with both legal and illegal drugs, and at an increasingly early age. some sociologists claim that parents and other members of society often set a bad example.

discuss the causes and some effects of widespread drug use by young people in modern day society. make any recommendations you feel are necessary to help fight youth drug abuse.

model answer:

youth drug abuse is a serious problem nowadays in many cultures. not only is illegal drug use on the rise, but children as young as 10 years old are experimenting with alcohol and tobacco. the reasons for this behaviour are unclear, but certain sociologists blame the examples set by their elders.

parents who drink and smoke to excess are, in effect, telling their children that it is acceptable to abuse their bodies with drugs. consequently, children may have a similar view towards illegal drugs, even if their parents are against their use. in addition, drug use shown on television and in films can only confuse children who are also taught at school that drug abuse is wrong.

the pressure on young people to perform well at school in order to compete for jobs is a possible cause of the problem. many believe they cannot live up to their parents' expectations, and feel a sense of hopelessness. also, the widespread availability of drugs means teenagers are faced with the temptation to experiment. drugs are used as a means of expressing dissatisfaction with the pressures they face in society.

the effects of drug abuse are well known. many young people's talents are wasted, and addiction to hard drugs can cost a user his or her life. furthermore, those who drink and drive may be involved in fatal road accidents. the cost to society is great, and enormous amounts of money are spent on convicting drug dealers and on education programmes.

to conclude, i recommend that the only sensible way to solve this problem is to educate young people about the dangers of drug use, and to take steps to reduce the pressure of competition placed upon them.

as a result of constant media attention, sports professionals in my country have become stars and celebrities, and those at the top are paid huge salaries. just like movie stars, they live extravagantlifestyles with huge houses and cars.

many people find their rewards unfair, especially when comparing these super salaries with those of top surgeons or research scientists, or even leading politicians who have the responsibilityof governing the country. however, sports salaries are not determined by considering the contribution to society a person makes, or the level of responsibility he or she holds. instead, they reflect the public popularity of sport in general and the level of public support that successful stars can generate. so the notion of ‘fairness’ is not the issue.

those who feel that sports stars’ salaries are justified might argue that the number of professionals with real talent are very few, and the money is a recognition of the skills and dedication a person needs to be successful. competition is constant and a player is tested every time they perform. in their relatively short career. the pressure from the media is intense and there is little privacy out of the spotlight. so all of thesefactors may justify the huge earnings.

personally, i think that the amount of money such sports stars make is more justified than the huge earnings of movie stars, but at the same time, it indicatesthat our society places more value on sport than on more essential professions and achievements.

范文节选:however, depopulation is not the ultimate solution to overcrowding in urban areas; new problems may arise. firstly, the need for public-sector dwellings is not eliminated. with the number of migrants to cities constantly increasing, the vacated places are quickly inhabited by newcomers, so that the government has to develop more land to build houses. moreover, evicting people does not cut the demand for quality resources such as education, medical care, and infrastructure, which are clustered in city centres. if rural areas are incapable of satisfying those needs, some people may still choose to travel back to their urban homes, thereby creating more traffic flow on the limited road space. furthermore, simply shifting buildings to regional areas does not weaken vehicle dependency, as long as accessible public transit and industry cluster are not developed. since companies are further from their clients, providers and other contractors, greater traffic volumes are still likely to be induced by transporting raw materials, delivering goods and services, and travelling on business.

范文节选:there is no doubt that the dense population and limited land resources are responsible for housing shortage in major cities, while the rural area is sparsely populated with sufficient land supply. if some companies, factories and their employees moved out of town, there would be more vacant buildings to meet the demand of city dwellers. besides, with fewer people travelling to and from work inside the city, traffic is expected to be reduced and pressure on the public transportation system eased.

范文节选: on the one hand, most big cities are suffering from large population and limited resources. if big companies and factories, together with their huge number of employees, move to the countryside, there will be fewer people living in the city, then with the housing pressure reduced, the housing prices will surely go down. meanwhile, the urban traffic will also improve because the number of commuters to and from work every day is now smaller. on the other hand, businesses moving to rural area will stimulate the consumption and facilitate infrastructure in this area apart from offering employment opportunities to the local people.

范文节选:initially, americans ranked the top, with an average height of approximately 168 cm which was immediately followed by british (166cm) while people from denmark and france were slightly higher than 160 cm.

if people are asked why students go to university, i believe that many of the answers would be: to find a good job! it is true that job commitment is an important function of higher education. however, i think it has other functions.

for one thing, students learn to be independent in university. for many, if not all, of my schoolmates, entering university is the first time to leave home and live on their own. it is hard for them at first, but to my mind this is certainly an essential part of one's life, or else they may continue to receive parental care without getting mature as early as they should.

for another thing, students know better how to get along with people during the four years' university life. as we know, nowadays, many chinese children are the only child at home and thus unlike people of the previous generations who have brothers and sisters, they know little about how to be tolerant and considerate to people around them. there is no doubt that universities provide us with an opportunity to learn to do s for example, we have to think of others instead of only ourselves when we share a dormitory room with others.

lastly, besides imparting knowledge, university teachers also tell their students how to be a decent person in the rest of their life. for instance, students may learn how to be generous, think critically, be responsible for themselves, their family and work, etc. it is not a rare case for a student to change for the better under the influence of his university teacher.

to conclude, university education does not only prepare the students for a future job, but also teaches them important things that are to be useful all their life.

some people think that university should not provide theoretical knowledge, but to give practical training that is beneficial to society.

do you agree or disagree?

the current hot issues concerning higher education include the one of whether university should provide theoretical knowledge or practical training. in my opinion, this issue is closely related to the different aims of different universities and the needs of the economic development of the respective country.

as we know, university education gives a student a better appreciation of such fields as art, literature, history, science, and human relations. therefore, it is necessary for the university to provide theoretical knowledge for those students who intend to receive liberal education.

most universities also have professional colleges that prepare students for careers, such as teachers colleges, agricultural or dental colleges. these colleges, apart from offering some liberal arts courses, usually allocate a certain period of time for professional training. for example, a student at teachers college usually takes a field training at a high school as a student teacher for two or three months.

another important factor on this issue is the needs of the economic development of a respective county. for instance, in china, a great number of advanced professional personnel are needed to keep the pace with the rapid economic development. therefore, cooperative education that combines classroom studies with practical work experience is more appropriate an education china needs at the present time.

in a word, how much emphasis that should be laid on theoretical knowledge or practical training is determined by the needs of the economy of a respective country and the needs of all-round personnel for a democratic society.

one of the most important social developments that helped to make possible a shift in thinking about the role of public education was the effect of the baby boom of the 1950’s and 1960’s on the schools. in the 1920’s, but especially in the depression conditions of the 1930’s, the united states experienced a declining birth rate --- every thousand women aged fifteen to forty-four gave birth to about 118 live children in 1920, 89.2 in 1930, 75.8 in 1936, and 80 in 1940. with the growing prosperity brought on by the second world war and the economic boom that followed it young people married and established households earlier and began to raise larger families than had their predecessors during the depression. birth rates rose to 102 per thousand in 1946,106.2 in 1950, and 118 in 1955.

although economics was probably the most important determinant, it is not the only explanation for the baby boom. the increased value placed on the idea of the family also helps to explain this rise in birth rates. the baby boomers began streaming into the first grade by the mid 1940’s and became a flood by 1950. the public school system suddenly found itself overtaxed. while the number of schoolchildren rose because of wartime and postwar conditions, these same conditions made the schools even less prepared to cope with thefood. the wartime economy meant that few new schools were built between 1940 and 1945. moreover, during the war and in the boom times that followed, large numbers of teachers left their profession for better- paying jobs elsewhere in the economy.

therefore in the 1950’s and 1960’s, the baby boom hit an antiquated and inadequate school system. consequently, the “ custodial rhetoric” of the 1930’s and early 1940’s no longer made sense that is, keeping youths aged sixteen and older out of the labor market by keeping them in school could no longer be a high priority for an institution unable to find space and staff to teach younger children aged five to sixteen. with the baby boom, the focus of educators and of laymen interested in education inevitably turned toward the lower grades and back to basic academic skills and discipline. the system no longer had much interest in offering nontraditional, new, and extra services to older youths.
