the story happened in boston about 200 years ago. it narrates love affairs between three persons. the punished woman. hester prynne and his husband. who called himself roger chillingworth . he is an old misshapen man and a doctor. hester does not love him at all. another man is a young minister, dimmesdale, who has a high position among ministers and is highly respected among his people in town. hester and dimmesdale love each other. but their love is forbidden in that time . it is sinful. due to this, hester is punished by society with a letter a on her chest, which considered an evil,a shame.

in this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter a. hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. she is always with a mind of courage. she has been alone with her child for so long ,with litter communication. shame! hopelessness! loneliness! hester has to wear the letter a day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame.

when a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. if she be all tenderness, she will die. if she survive, the tenderness will leave her .hester’s charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. the letter on her chest represents her work on earth ,always helping others, without expecting any thanks. never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. the townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment ,but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “able”.

but arthur dimmesdale, his sin against hester and pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daughter in the daylight. he keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for seven years for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven. he is too weak to admit his sins. he suffers from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by psychological distress. what’s worse,he is an advisor to the townspeople about their sins.

after mr. dimmesdale’s death ,no one changes more in appearance than roger chilling worth. all his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient . this unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minister. when the evil old man no longer has such a purpose, the devil takes him back to the hell . it is a curious subject of observation, however, whether hatred or love are not of the same place. each takes a great deal of emotion from one person. the two feelings seem basically the same, expect that one is smiled upon by god, while the other is worshipped by the devil.

a tale of two cities

the tale of two cities is a historical story, one of dickens’ long fictions.the background to the novel is the revolution of france .it portrayed a brutal and bloody story , but it also contained love and friendship.

in the novel, dickens sarcastically described a typical cruel nobleman—marquis of evermonde . when he was young he and his brother stole a countrywoman by force and killed her family .what’s worse , he used his power to imprison dr manette , a kind and honest man who knew all the things they had done and wanted to disclose their crimes . in order to hide their crimes. marquis of evermonde and his brother threw doctor manette into prison for 18 years . during these 18 years, doctor manette lost his freedom and suffer a great in spirit .

i felt unthinkable that marquis of evermonde and his brother killed people just as easily as they killed chickens. they deprived other people’s freedom as they liked and they thought it was normal and unremarkable. they had never realized that they had done something wrong or something improper. because their nature was cruel and evil, like demons. there is an old saying which means: people who commit too many crimes will kill themselves. after all, there is justice in the world. the demons can’t be rampant forever. because the world will not forgive them. they will pay their lives for their crimes. let’s see the consequence of the marquis,’’he lay there like a stone with a knife pushed into his heart.” i think it was just what he ought to gain and it is a real exciting scene.

the marquis’ death was just the beginning of people’s resistance to the nobleman. gradually more and more people joined in the revolution. one after another nobleman were sentenced to death and their heads were cut down . however, some innocent people were implicated in the revolution. charles darney was one of them he was the nephew of marquis of evermonde. to the opposite of his uncle, darney was a kind and independent young man.

dickens spoke highly of kindness mercy and love in the novel too. this is the other thone of the novel when doctor manette was released from prison. it was his daughter lucie who took care of him and helped him return to normal. during this time, dr manette and lucie knew charles darney and sydeny carton, the two young man fell in love with lucie at the same time . at last, lucie married chares darney .dr manette accepted darney as his son-in-law although he knew that darney was the nephew of the man who threw him into prison for18 years. this is the love between father and daughter. and sydeny carton , the very great man ,loved lucie deeply. he promised lucie that he would do everything for her happiness. he did it truely ,he sacrificed himself instead of darney who looked the same as him. this is love for lovers . this is the most wonderful thing in the world. it also reminds us that no matter how no matter when there is true love existing. at the end , lucie, dr manette and darney arrived in england safely.

the tale of two cities is different from other historical fictions. its characters and main plots are fictional under the real background of the revolution of france. the author made the experience of the fictional charactor dr manette as the main clue.the plots are complicated, and they are flexuous and dramatic. the structure is complete and rigorous.

dickens had dear love and hate. he praised those who ought to be praised and attacked those who ought to be attacked. the motivation of the novel maybe just warn the english dominators. but i think we can learn something meaningful from the tale of two cities.

gulliver’s tra一vel is a fairy tale written by jonathan swift. it’s a very interesting story full of imagination. besides, the description is vivid and appealing, when i read it i feel like i’m tra一veling with the hero in the story.

jonathan swift was born in ireland, but his parents are english. he has written many books such as a tale of a tub and the battle of books, respectively criticizes and attacks the corruption of religion and prejudice of scholar authority. his drapier’s letters reveals the attempt of england to destroy the economy of ireland. for this reason, english government awarded 300pounds for catching swift. however, nobody in ireland betrayed him. swift died in 1745, and he said in his testament that he would give all his property to the charity.

gulliver’s tra一vels tells a story of captain gulliver’s unique experience. gulliver has a strong desire of tra一veling around the world since he grew up. however, when he became a captain, he tra一vels not between different countries but between strange places we never imagine.

the first time, his boat encountered a storm and he swan to the shore. when he woke up he found himself surrounded by small men later he realized he had come to the country “liliput”, which was a country of small men. in the country, the people treated him very friendly, they ga一ve him food and drink and wine. he? lived happily and he was nice to them as well. later, the king asked him to help fight the other country blefuscu for a very amusing reason: people there break their eggs at the big end while people in liliput break eggs on the small end. gulliver helped the king win the battle and soon after that he went home.

the second time, he set sail and met a fierce storm again. this time he found a land which was a country named broadingnag. it was a country of giants. you can guess his whereabouts. the huge people treated him as a pet. they put him on show, give speech and do sword drill, till he was tired out. later he was sent to the queen, the queen liked him very much and had him dine with her everyday. but life was not easy for him. nevertheless, something interesting happened. when he wanted to read, he had to climb up on the book and walk from left to right to read a line. imagine that scene i couldn’t help laughing. another story is playing the piano. he had to strike the keys hard with his first.

people comment the book as a satire to england even to the whole europe. in detail, that is, the first experience use the amusing reason of war to criticize the parties and religion of england, the second experience satirizes the boast and conceit of the whole europeans. nevertheless, in my opinion, i only see the vivid portrayal and the interesting imagination. maybe it’s because it’s the first time i read the story and know not so much about the background and situation of the author and his society, but the story really impresses me. i like the exotic experience of gulliver, and i like swifer’s imagination. a masterpiece which can influence generation after generation surely has its reason, maybe for the profound understanding of history, maybe for the description of people’s life. this novel may ha一ve something to do with sarcasm, but to me, at least by now, is a pure fantasy and a wonderful fairy tale.
